minute we are up and running?’

‘Without a doubt,’ Jacob replied, ‘like I said to Evelyn, I know people who have their own businesses and want to expand over here and they will need a firm that will have a lot of time to devote to them. They trust me and I trust them. Some of them are very old friends.’

‘We have to wait for the bank to approve our joint loan,’ I replied. ‘The loan would buy this place, we would have to get someone to draw out some kind of workable design-‘

‘Here,’ Jacob said as Talia walked forward and handed him a red folder which he handed to me. ‘There are a variety of designs there that you both will have to go through to see which one suits and you can always mess around with it to make it more convenient later on. A friend of mine drew them up, as for this building, I will have the builders return once the loan has been approved by the proper authorities and it will be ready for you to take over.’

‘You are very generous,’ Lorraine replied. ‘The lawyer in me says too generous.’

‘Not really,’ Jacob replied pleasantly. ‘I will need a lot of legal advice and lawyers to work for me and you will be in the position to give it to me.’

‘Let’s talk business then,’ Lorraine said.

Minutes later both Jacob and Lorraine were scribbling notes and swapping information as they furiously debated every aspect of the law firm. I walked towards Talia and we moved towards the stairs to talk.

‘Hi, Sienna,’ I said.

‘I thought if she mentioned Talia Holmes to Mark it would cause trouble for you,’ Talia replied.

‘Good thinking.’

‘Looks like things are moving along smoothly,’ Talia said, nodding at where Lorraine was smiling and laughing with Jacob.

‘Aye.’

Talia smiled as Lorraine approached.

‘Ready?’ I asked.

‘We have some things down,’ Lorraine said. ‘Now it is up to me and you to come up with a feasible plan for the firm and how to hit the ground running without breaking our legs.’

‘Everything will be okay,’ Talia said. ‘You two will do great things. I am sure.’

‘I hope so,’ I replied as I followed Lorraine out into the car where we sat for nearly one hour discussing everything we had learned and analyzing it and although we had no way of knowing it, the foundations of our firm were built that night when we both looked at each other exhausted and ready to snap at each other’s throat before sitting there in silence surrounded by a thick volatile atmosphere.

‘Did you punch a priest?’ Lorraine asked, lighting a cigarette and opening the window.

‘I did.’

‘Why?’

‘He wouldn’t say a prayer for Sophie’s daughter because she was born out of wedlock.’

‘Cunt.’

‘I doubt if he is that useful.’

Lorraine turned her head to face me as I stared straight out the windscreen and listened to her laughing until tears ran down her face and she was forced to toss the burning cigarette out the half-open window.
